Elvis and Yuki are a newly arrived pair of Japanese Snow Macaques whose mysterious background has left a sense of curiosity among caregivers. They were left at the front gate of the sanctuary in December 2024—unsure, but safe. Their shared surrender suggests a potential long-standing bond, as they spend most of their time near one another and continue to adjust to their new life.
Elvis has striking features with his long stature, long red face and beady eyes. He tends to be calm and observe cautiously before engaging as he hangs back, studying caregivers and new enrichment with quiet curiosity. He likes to perch high in the enclosure to keep watch over the sanctuary, but he leaps with quick speed to the bottom to protect his surroundings, and his long arms and quick movements demand attention. He is learning new activities, being introduced to enrichment activities and he delights in the treasures he finds with the activity.
Yuki is small, but lively, has luminous eyes and a bright red face. Her curiosity and watchful glances are intriguing. Although initially reserved, she has become more comfortable with her surroundings and now comfortably utilizes all the space in both enclosures. She’s quick to call out to staff when she sees the slightest of food in someone’s hand and reaches out gesturing for more.
Although Japanese Macaques prefer fruit, these two like a variety of foods and enjoy sorting through the food to find special treasures.
