Christian and Cheeky are a lively and bonded pair of macaques with a whole lot of personality. They share a large enclosure to accommodate their activity level.
Cheeky, a bonnet macaque, is gentle, playful, and expressive. He’s often seen posing with a blanket draped over his head or cuddling underneath it. He enjoys playing with toys, sitting in swings and toy cars and enjoys different enrichment puzzles. He voluntarily shares his food (especially onions!) rather than fighting for it, and has a reputation for calm affection—though he can surprise you with a sudden burst of wild energy.
Christian, a rhesus macaque, brings his own joyful flair. He loves to make children laugh by running to the front of his enclosure, spinning around, and peeking at them upside down between his legs. He also likes to swing on a swing and push things around the enclosure to remind you of his toughness. He cools off in his wading pool in summer and stays cozy under blankets by the heater with Cheeky in winter. He reminds caregivers often of his wild side by trying to grab anything within his reach, making a stiff arm fist bump, running at his enclosure or giving his wild eyed look. He is never depleted of energy.
Together, Christian and Cheeky spend hours grooming, relaxing, and entertaining visitors with their antics and unmistakable bond. Their unique friendship and expressive personalities make them one of the sanctuary’s most endearing duos.
