Gabriel is a white-faced capuchin monkey. Capuchin monkeys are quite popular in the pet trade, as they are high energy, have great personalities and are very intelligent. Gabriel is all that and more. He is typically very busy most of the day, playing with all his toys, dragging things around with his tail or banging things to make noise. He loves attention and when caregivers are around, he sticks out his long tail, trying to grab his caregivers on the leg or catch an object that may be near. He is very quick, and likes to grab the serving spoon when being fed, splattering his food all over. At times he is known to throw food at new caregivers. He enjoys most food, but prefers to sort his food and choose what he likes and eat that first. He loves to touch, smell and pat his caregivers shoes. He does take time out of his busy day to survey the sanctuary from his high perches and squeals when he sees someone he is fond of. He is also known to spin around and do a little break dancing for them. He loves to play tug of war, do enrichment puzzles, and groom his roommate Jackie.
Gabriel is partnered with Jackie, a Cinnamon capuchin. She is also very intelligent and likes to busy herself with various tasks, such as holding her ball in her tail while climbing around her enclosure. She likes to manipulate small things, such as strings on blankets, removing seeds from various fruits or picking at little things on the floor of her enclosure. She is more sedentary than her roommate, but equally as intriguing. She likes to gather nuts and seeds in a pile prior to eating them. She likes to choose her food from the community food bowl rather than be served, making sure she gets exactly what she wants. She likes to play ball and makes soft little noises when she is happy or excited. She is a fan favorite due to her small size. She likes her roommate and they are known to sleep side by side, eat snacks next to each other and groom each other. Her favorite foods are fruits and vegetables with seeds and oatmeal bars with nuts and fruits. She likes to snuggle with a blanket at night, taking it into her night house in cooler weather and at times has retrieved it for her caregivers when asked.
Capuchin monkeys do not have food pouches, so they typically take their time when eating, preferring to graze over a period of time. Caregivers are asked to give them extra time to eat, while the baboon and macaques are stuffing their food pouches to eat later.
